Fall football season is here, and it is time to start tailgating! If you have ever been to a tailgating party, then you know that they are usually packed to the gills with munchies of all kinds. We always love a good excuse to hang out with friends, but being a vegetarian among carnivores means that most of the time, the tables are filled with things we can’t eat. Luckily for us, MorningStar Farms® has some amazing veggie cuisine that is perfect for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and this BBQ Veggie Pulled Pork Pizza is just the thing to spice up any party spread!
Tailgating is a big tradition in my community, and the love for our local teams are strong. Personally I just like the excitement of it all, and flexing my chef muscles on the grill is a great perk to hosting game day gatherings at my home. Grilled pizza is a newly found love of mine, and lately I have been experimenting with different flavors and toppings, and this barbecue sauce based version is absolute perfection! To come up with it, I started with a base of MorningStar Farms® Veggie Pulled Pork and chose my ingredients from there. This is a new product that I found at Walmart, and I love that it is a good “as-is” solution, so I can simply mix in some sauce and serve. If you want to try it for yourself, here is an Ibotta offer for extra savings:
Moving on to the recipe, here is what you need:
- BBQ sauce (recipe here if you don’t have one already)
- 1 cup MorningStar Farms® Veggie Pulled Pork
- 1 cup Mozzarella cheese
- 1 refrigerated or bakery-bought pizza crust
- 1/2 red onion
- Hand full of cilantro
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- Italian seasoning
- Black pepper to taste
First, prepare your pizza crust. If you are working with refrigerated dough, roll it out into a 14-inch circle. If you are using homemade or bakery bought dough, let it sit for an hour in a warm spot, then roll or toss out into a 14-inch circle. Let sit on a piece of aluminum foil while you prepare the rest of your ingredients. Next, mix up 3 tbsp barbecue sauce with your veggie pulled pork, adding more one teaspoon at a time until evenly coated.
Doesn’t that look delicious? I like to set a little aside and use for sandwiches, but that is optional. After that, dice up your onions and cilantro, and then spread out a thin layer of bbq sauce all over your pizza dough, leaving an inch around the edge unbrushed.
Sprinkle on a little cheese, some pulled pork, garlic, and onions.
Finish it off with a layer of cheese, cilantro, and your spices.
Cook in the grill on medium-high heat, with the lid closed, for around 20 minutes. Grill temperatures vary, so be sure to check after 10 minutes and move/rotate if needed. You can also bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 25 minutes. Once the bottom is easily lifted from your foil, your pizza will be done!
Cut in slices, and serve!
I chose to make this into a circle, but you can also do a rectangle for smaller, easier to handle slices when used as a game day snack. If you aren’t a fan of the pulled pork, you can also use MorningStar Farms® Original Chik Patties in this by cutting them up and mixing with the bbq sauce. I personally love both ways!
