Being a busy mom who also runs a small business means that I get virtually no time for myself. Usually the only time I am alone and responsibility free is when I lay down to sleep after staying up way too late, and even then my wheels are still turning with thoughts of everything I have on my plate. Since nobody can thrive under constant pressure and stress, I have found it essential to set aside some time to step away from everything that is going on, center myself, and relax for a few minutes. Yes, it is difficult to walk away from the compute or put down the camera, but in the long run it helps me be more efficient and actually get things done, rather than ending up staring at a blank screen for hours because I am mentally burnt out. So how do we recharge our mental batteries when the days are so hectic? Here are a few things that have helped me, along with a fun video of them all!
Walk More
Yes, I know this sounds a little counter to the whole relaxation thing, but think about it: You drive to work, you park in the closest spot you can, you take the elevator, and you are at your desk (or whatever work space you have) before you know it. For myself, any time alone with my thoughts is time I can enjoy, so I take every opportunity to do things the long way. An extra minute or two spent deep breathing and taking in my surroundings is sometimes all I need to start the day off better than the one before.
Have a Snack Break
One of my favorite ways to grab some “me” time is by sitting down with a snack and reading a few pages in my current book. Overly indulgent snacks can end up having the opposite effect and making me feel heavy and tired, which isn’t good, but snacks that are too healthy don’t feel like a treat at all. So, finding a balance between decadent and healthy is the sweet spot. My solution? The new Oui by Yoplait.
I spotted these little pots of French style yogurt at Walmart, and grabbed as many different flavors as I could! I wasn’t sure how they would taste, but there is something about the glass jars and the French style that intrigued me. Once I got home and tried them, I was in love! Not only do they look pretty, but these jars of authentic French-style yogurt have a rich, creamy, just right flavor that has quickly become my go-to when I want to relax and treat myself. Oui is available in eight single-serve flavors, but my favorite so far is the strawberry because I am a sucker for anything fresh and berry flavored. This non-GMO yogurt is inspired by Yoplait’s traditional French recipe, and is cultured in each glass pot for eight hours before sealing, creating the perfect texture. I love kicking my feet up and enjoying a jar while reading my favorite book, and the subtle sweetness and rich creaminess is perfect for eating slowly!
Choose a Bath
Instead of showering every time, switch one to a bath every week. Even if it only lasts for a few minutes, submerging in warm water, closing my eyes, and relaxing works wonders for my muscle tension and mood. I can go into a bath feeling very physically stressed and exhausted, but come out refreshed even ten minutes later. I love using essential oils in my bath, and my favorites for relaxation are lavender and sandalwood.
Try Aromatherapy
As mentioned above, aromatherapy is awesome for relaxation or changing moods. I find them especially helpful for sitting at my computer or even on-the-go. Most places that carry oils also carry different dispensation systems like roller balls and sprays, and keeping a roller ball in your purse for any time you need to rub a little sandalwood or peppermint on your temples or the back of your neck is a super easy way to have a mini-refresher within minutes.
Read
One of my favorite ways to escape is to read. I don’t have a ton of time to do it, but I always make it a point to get in at least 10 minutes a day, mostly at night before I go to bed. It is a way to forget about the stresses of my day and get lost in something else!
Find a Hobby
Doing things with your hands, crafting, collection, and other similar activities are a great way to shift your mind from things that are stressing you out. Gardening is a great love of mine, and one of those things I do that can always calm me. I find it extremely relaxing, and it is something that I can do just for myself. I love taking care of my plants, watering them, and harvesting them, and I think the entire process can be extremely therapeutic. If gardening isn’t your thing, find something that is! When our days are filled with responsibilities, having a designated “escape” of any kind is a great way to shrug off your stress and be alone with your thoughts.
