Something magical is happening right now that I haven’t seen in six years. For the first time in a very long time, the house is kid free during the week! Yes, I love them to pieces, but you know what? Mama’s gotta have some alone time. And with them being in school, I have a whole lot more of that now! I work from home, so most days I am unavailable from 9am-whenever anyway, but this week I have taken full advantage of my kid free time by doing a major bedroom overhaul that has been on my mind for forever. I am not completely finished yet, but thanks to smart positioning, a few style updates, and a brand new luxury foam mattress, it looks like a whole new room! Now, let’s check it out!
The first thing I did was to move the furniture around, because it is the easiest way to refresh a room without actually doing anything. I don’t know why, but for some reason I did not position our bed in the best spot when we moved in which ended up cutting the room in half and leaving very little open space. I have been wishing our room was less cluttered for a while now, but simply moving the bed from one wall to another opened it up so much!
Bed Refresh
Personally, I think my bed is the most important part of my bedroom. Proper sleep is crucial to being able to function throughout the day without falling over, so having a great mattress is a must. Why else is sleep important? Here’s just a few reasons I have found in my research:
- Your body replenishes itself and heals muscles while you sleep. Without the proper sleep cycles, this doesn’t work as well.
- Getting enough sleep help out with short-term-memory.
- Without proper sleep, you won’t be as alert as you should be during the day.
- Well-rested people tend to be happier.
- Drowsy driving is responsible for over 100,000 crashes each year- that’s a scary statistic!
- Do you get migraines like me? Getting enough sleep can help prevent them and other headaches.
The bed I’ve had for the past 8 years started out amazing, but over time it wore out and developed dips where we slept, and for half a year now I’ve had to situate myself just right in the dip to sleep comfortably. Even then, I still had to deal with insane motion transfer whenever either of us moved. Which is just nonsense. So, I did a ton of research, stumbled onto the amazing world of direct-to-consumer luxury mattresses, and landed in front of the Yogabed. Oh my goodness it is everything I am looking for and then some! I reached out to them and they graciously offered to send a mattress so I could share it here!
The YogaBed is a luxury foam mattress made up of the Yoga Comfort System™, which is built on four core layers:

I have slept on traditional spring/coil mattresses all my life, so this was a completely different (but better) experience. The first time I laid on it, all I could think about what how amazingly soft the cover material was and how much more supportive it was than my previous mattress. It was delivered to my door in a cardboard box, and to set it up all I had to do was unroll, cut the plastic, and watch it spring to life before my eyes. I love the look of this mattress, and I really like that the top half of the cover can zip off for washing if I need to.
You can’t test this mattress before you purchase, but they offer a great trial where you can return it at any time up to 365 nights. That means you can sleep on it for a year, and if you it isn’t working for you, get a refund! I’d say that is much better than the department store “test it for five minutes” deal. And it has a 10 year warranty, which is pretty cool too.
The first night sleeping on it felt completely different than my old mattress, so it took some getting used to, but once my body started settling in to sleeping on something that is actually supportive in all the right places, I began waking up from a much better sleep than I had been before. Oh yeah, and the motion transfer is fabulous! I no longer wake when my husband moves around or gets out of bed – it is SO amazing! Here is a quick video that shows how well it holds up to motion transfer:

Next Steps
My bedroom furniture is very dark. It got it right before Judah was born, and at that time I was totally into its espresso stained tone, but over the years my tastes have evolved and I have fallen in love with bright whites and pale, muted tones in home decor. Dark furniture doesn’t do anything to help make a room look larger, but whites? They are great for minimizing small spaces. So, I plan on painting my dark wood white to help brighten up the room and help the overall look of it. I will share more photos once that is finished, and I also plan to add some (minimal) artwork and design elements to bring out my favorite trends as well.
Yogabed is comprised of the Yoga Comfort System™, an advanced layered system specifically designed to optimally support the body by dispersing weight evenly and reducing pressure points that cause tossing and turning.
