Whew, it’s been a while since I updated my office! I work from home, and while I do love my space, I’ve been so busy that I have let it go a little bit. I need to move around a few things, replace others, and just do a general re-organizing of it. Plus I need some upgrades to help accommodate my growing work base. So, I thought I’d show you a little peek into my area and start off with a simple desk update. I’ve got more coming, but for now, since the desk is my main area, I am starting there. So, here is what it looked like before:
Not bad, right? maybe a little simple, but it’s been okay. My main issues are space and storage, and of course that ancient looking chair! Besides physical storage, I am also adding a new WD My Cloud Mirror system to help backup my work. As a photographer, I shoot tens of thousands of images every year, and that takes up a lot of space!
Until now I have been storing my work on not only a virtual cloud but a hand full of small external hard drives as well. It works, but (1.) they don’t have their own backups if they fail, and (2) I’m really not digging having a pile of hard drives to find a place for. With the MyCloud from WD I can store up to 4 terabytes of work, and if that isn’t enough, the unit itself houses two drives that completely mirror each other. So if one fails, I’ve got a duplicate. I can’t tell you how important that is, especially if a magazine or client comes calling 8 months after a shoot looking for a particular image to use. (Yes, this happens, and if the image isn’t there, that’s money I’m not getting paid.) It is super easy to set up, and can be used to back up all the devices on my home network. It is available in 4, 6, and 8 TB, and has a 2 year warranty. So go ahead, #KEEPITCOMING.
So, to solve my space issue, I added a small shelf beside my desk. One level holds my calendar and financial binders, the middle level holds lenses and random photography gear, and the top is where I set up my cloud storage. As you can see, I like white, so I’m super glad that it matches!
I like a clutter free desk, so I rearranged a few things and freed up some more space on my work surface that had been piling up.
And I replaced that awful chair for a modern, sleeker look. Nice, right?
It wasn’t much of a makeover, but a little facelift feels SO much better when I’m sitting at my desk now.
