Having a house full of kids means a few things. First, no matter how often I tidy up, my house will never truly be “clean” until they get older. And two, my furniture takes quite a beating. Seriously – we have had our couch for a good five years, and it was pristine for the first two of them. Guess what happened once Judah was born and he started walking? You guessed it – spills, snot, and who knows what else made its way onto my beautiful green couch. But you know what? It happens. And for the first few years of parenthood your house is going to get crazy. Even though the home decor lover in me was crying, I held off from any updates to our family room until they moved out of the spill-everything-everywhere stage. But guess what? I finally took the updating plunge, and I am in love with the new look!
For my family, the living room is where we spend time together. It is our “home base” of the house, and that means it gets a lot of traffic. Up until now it was a thrown together mashup of a couch, a kids art table, a super old side table with chipped paint all over the place, and the walls were covered in random artwork. This is what it looked like before:
Ew, right? It doesn’t even look like a family living area. But check out this after:
Gorgeous! And I scored it all at Big Lots. I.can’t.even. Wow, right? I have been a fan of their furniture for a while, but I didn’t have a reason to buy any until now, and I am SO in love with this! When I was thinking about how I would do this room, I knew I wanted to either replace our couch or add a love seat. In the end, I decided that adding a second sitting area was the best way to go, and I fell in love with this Hillspring Loveseat as soon as I saw it.
There were tons of others to choose from (styles and assortments vary by store), but this one is just so cushy! And, it was a great deal, which means I had more to spend on extras! My shopping experience was great – I was able to purchase the loveseat, schedule to pick it up the next day, and then carry on with my shopping. It was super easy, and when I picked it up it was ready and waiting for me.
Speaking of extras, I bought a number of extra pillows for both couch and loveseat because I can never have enough pillows!
I wanted something that could tie the room together and get rid of the big empty space, so I found a really great ottoman that is perfect for us! I love the versatility of it and it is just the right height for a footrest OR a table. After all, with kids, function is just as important as style.
It also has tons of space underneath for storing extra pillows, books, anything we want! I could even put some fabric storage cubes underneath and I think they would look great.
I think my style is a mix of eclectic/minimalist, and I hate having things “displayed” on shelves and tables. I’ve never been a big fan of that, but I do like to add small, functional items that dress up a space without being gaudy, so I grabbed a few seasonal candles that match my room colors as a little decorative accent.
I also replaced my chipping shelf with a dark wood side table and it matched my ottoman perfectly! I love dark wood, and the tones I have going on in this room are super warm and inviting!
For the walls, I wanted to keep up with the spirit of displaying my children’s artwork, so I bought some canvases and paint, then taped them up and let them go crazy with the paint. Once they dried, I took the tape off and ended up with some adorable art! I hung them on the wall above the loveseat with my favorite portrait of them, and I love it!
So how do you think I did? I feel like this is an entirely new room, and it’s all thanks to the super cool style I scored at Big Lots! I stayed in my budget, and I found some amazing pieces that fit my style perfectly. I can’t wait to do another room! Want to redo your own space? Head over to Big Lots and see what they have to offer!
