My Global Back Deck Makeover

We have been in our house for a little over two years now, and during that time I have carefully crafted our outdoor space into a great place for our family to spend time in. It has everything – a garden, a kids’ area, storage space, a picnic table and more. Pretty much everything that we need, except the one part that I never got around to sprucing up was our back porch. Crazy, I know. I’ve always wanted to turn it into a space so amazing that it really takes me to another place, and thanks to the amazing selections at Pier 1 Imports I’m super happy to say that I have finally done it!

Now before I go any further, check out what this space looked like before.

Ick! Not only was it uninviting, but it was a total waste of space too. Sure, I had the table and chairs (which we eat at all the time) and a bench, but it really just looked like a spot we used to stick things we didn’t know what to do with. There was no personality, no flair, no real draw to spend time there. But now? I’m in love with it down to the very last detail! Oh, and did I mention that it cost me less than $1000 for everything you see here? Yeah, I was pretty amazed with myself on that.

I have always been an adventurer, so I drew my inspiration from the places that I’ve either seen or have always wanted to see. My style is pretty eclectic, and I really wanted to give it a global feel with warm rich colors, bold patterns and gorgeous jewel tones. My main goal for this space was to create a spot where I can “get away” from my everyday tasks and relax in comfort, so I started with this amazing Coco Cove settee for just under $300. Isn’t it great? I love wicker furniture for outdoors – this set is weather proofed and stands up to the elements. Plus it’s easy to clean as it can be vacuumed or even washed with soapy water.

I love how big it is – I grew up having wicker furniture that was small and flimsy, but it really has come a long way since then. This settee has a great seat depth, and I can fully stretch out on it too! I added a super fluffy cushion topper and a gorgeous warm toned pillow to polish it off.

Any great seating area needs some kind of table, so I also added the matching coffee table. It’s more than enough room to set my laptop on when I want to work outside, and perfect as a tablescape for a brunch tray or even a party. I love the extra storage area underneath too.

I’m sure by now you have noticed my gorgeous jeweled lantern. How could you not? Seriously, the first time I saw it I knew I just had to have it – I think it really gives my space a “wow” factor, don’t you?

And look at it shining in the sun. Can you say fabulous?! I think it’s one of those statement pieces that you just have to look at from every angle. The colors are amazing and seriously, it was less than $40. Shocked, right?

I also scooped up this smaller lantern trio and embossed accent stool. I feel like I can never have enough surfaces, so having the table and the stool gives me some great versatility. I can even use the stool as a table if I want to. The lantern trio takes three tea lights, but I filled one with potpourri instead to help me feel more immersed in my setup. Not only does it look and feel like I’m in my own little oasis, it smells like it too!

It didn’t take much to transform my bare deck into something amazing! I really love how the Outdoor Living collection from Pier 1 Imports has such an eclectic offering of decor that really speaks to my own style. Plus their quality can’t be beat. I’ve been spending my afternoons out here pretty much all week and de-stressing which feels amazing, but what I really love is what happens when the sun goes down. I thought it was great in the light, but when the lanterns are glowing and the sky is getting dark, it really turns into a warm, intimate space that is just magical. I can see myself spending SO many evenings out here!
