I created this post as part of a sponsored campaign with Pop Secret. All opinions are my own.
Do you ever have one of those days where you want to just skip all your responsibility, play with your kids and hide in a pillow fort? Yeah, I have them quite frequently. Being my own boss makes me work harder than ever because of how much responsibility goes along with it, but whoa, sometimes mama needs a break! I am a firm believer in spending as much quality time as I can with my kids, so one thing that we do pretty much weekly is move the couch out of the way, set up a fort in the living room and have a “movie night” together while we munch on popcorn and enjoy each other’s company. It usually falls on a Wednesday because that’s when all the new movies come out on instant video, and I love finishing up my work for the day and getting to relax with my kids. It’s the perfect mid week pick-me-up! This week I thought I’d share a peek into our tradition, talk a little about the art of fort building and give you a fab recipe for birthday cake popcorn. Yes, you read that right. birthday cake popcorn. See it? Yum. You’re totally going to want to stick around for the recipe.
Before we get to the food, lets talk forts. There’s just something magical about fort building that makes you feel warm and safe, and when I was a kid I remember hiding in a fort whenever I was afraid or lonely, and then everything was alright. I used to pretend that it was my own little world and I loved it! Now that I’ve passed the torch I love watching the kids figure out how to build them and use whatever they can find to rig them up. Imagination is key here, and each fort tells a different story. We have made rocket ship forts, pirate ships, caves, cabins and invisible hideaways and each one brings a new adventure!
Now how could you not think that’s fun? Besides the actual fort, the inside is pretty important as well and in our family the cushier the better so we load it up with blankets, pillows and stuffed animals to make it comfy.
And then after that we’re ready to sit down for a movie and some popcorn. We usually just eat the popcorn plain, but I wanted to get a little creative with it this week so I came up with a super easy, super delicious birthday cake flavored popcorn that has quickly become our new favorite popcorn snack ever. Want to make it for yourself? Check out the recipe below!
Chocolate Birthday Cake Popcorn
You will need:
- One bag of Pop Secret popcorn (follow this link to get a $1 off coupon!).
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips.
- 1/2 cup melting caramel.
- 1/3 cup powdered yellow cake mix.
- Rainbow sprinkles.
The first thing you want to do is pop your popcorn. I like to use Pop Secret’s regular butter because it is the perfect amount of butter for this recipe without it being too much. When your popcorn is finished popping, take it out immediately and make a small opening inside the bag. Pour your yellow cake mix in and shake for a minute so that each piece gets evenly coated. After that pour it into a large bowl and set aside.
Now melt your chocolate and caramel and then drizzle them over your popcorn one at a time. I like to do the caramel first and let it set before I do the chocolate so they don’t mix together, but you can do whichever you like.
Shake on your sprinkles before the chocolate sets and you are finished! Don’t you just want to dig in right now?
Wasn’t that easy? Now go ahead and get silly, be a kid again, and throw up a pillow fort in your living room. The kids will love it, you will love it, and you just might get rid of a little stress in the process!
