At this time last year I was in a little bit of denial. I was balancing a newly 1 year old, a kid in preschool a growing mountain of work all while battling tons of stress and quite a bit of emotional eating. Yes, I said it. I have been known to be an emotional eater. I normally keep my snacking habits in check, but for a bit the world got *just* a little much for me to handle and I freaked. I stopped staying active, I stopped making smart food choices and I pretty much let my stress rule my life. I can say that it wasn’t a pretty sight but I was completely unaware of the sedentary, sleep deprived crazy person I had become. I knew I needed to change, but I didn’t know exactly how bad. It wasn’t until a bloggy friend of mine asked me to team up with her to speak at a conference that I finally woke up and took a good, hard look at myself and decided I needed to make some changes and set some health goals. Read on to see what I found that worked for me, plus enter to win a FitBit!
I have never been great at sticking to traditional fitness practices. Pushups make me cringe and the only way I will run is if there is significant cash waiting for me at the finish line. But turning around my health doesn’t just happen without some commitment. That’s where Walgreens comes in. I have used their Balance Rewards program for a while now, but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered their healthy choices program. Besides the regular rewards on everyday items, it also helps support active lifestyles by awarding points for making healthy choices. Now I don’t know about you, but I need a little reward every now and then to stay motivated and keep myself on the right track!
Through the healthy choices part of Balance Rewards you can find all kinds of motivations for being active. It is a one stop tool for activity tracking and lets you record your weight and steps over time. You can even connect your own fitness tracking device like a FitBit, Jawbone and more to your account and start racking up points for the steps you are already taking! I currently use an ibitz which isn’t supported, but if it was I would have TONS of rewards points by now!
Another great way to stay on top of fitness is to snack smart and stay hydrated. Back when I was in my downward spiral I opted for sugar filled sweets to give me bursts of energy throughout the day, but what it really did was end up making me feel like crud every night, and building that bad feeling up gradually so that I felt tired and heavy all.the.time. Now I snack on good for me foods like protein packed almonds, trail mix, Clif bars and fresh fruit. And guess what? The healthy choices program offers even more great rewards for choosing healthy snacks like these. I picked up a pack of almonds, two Clif bars and some vitamins and earned 2000 points in one trip!
Speaking of vitamins, that is another great way to make sure you are staying on top of your health. We all need certain nutrients in our bodies to help it perform its best, and sometimes we just don’t get that from the foods we eat. These gummy vitamins from Walgreens are a great basic multivitamin for anyone and they are gummies – pure genius!
Those are just some of the ways that you can earn points towards cash and discounts through Balance Rewards and healthy choices. I’m glad I found this cool program when I did, even though I’m happy to say that after 8 months of hard work, discipline and a lot of meditation I am happily back to my old fabulous, fit self! Not only do I feel better, but my career is going full force, I am happier, and most importantly I can handle the stress better because I am treating my body right.
