How To Cook Apples

June 10, 2013 by Jess MillionMoments

Have you ever bitten into a homemade apple pie or turnover and wondered how to make the yummy, ooey gooey middle?  I have.  I am in LOVE with apple desserts, but up until recently I had no idea how to make apple filling.  As much as I loved all things apple, I never tried to cook with them before because I thought that it had to be some crazy process with tons of ingredients and skills.  Well guess what?  It turns out that apple filling is surprisingly simple to make.  When my husband (who is a chef) told me, I had a true “a-ha” moment and wondered why in the world I waited so long to figure it out!

How to cook apple filling.

I’m sure you might need to know this sometime in your life, so here is the recipe.  This will take four ingredients and less than ten minutes, so if you need to use the filling immediately make sure you have everything ready before hand!  Start with some apples.  Granny Smiths are my favorite, but use whatever you would like.

Cut them into smallish cubes and drop them into a large skillet.  Add in lime juice, brown sugar and cinnamon.  The measurements for this aren’t very exact, so your best bet is to start small and add to taste because you don’t want to end up with a mixture that is too sweet or sour.  I use 1/4 cup lime juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon per 4 apples.  I know it seems odd to be adding lime juice to already tart Granny Smith apples, but combined with the brown sugar this is a fantastic flavor combination!  Cook on medium/high heat for 5-8 minutes until your apples are golden brown.

You want to make sure to stir ever few minutes and don’t over cook.  When it is ready your apples will be soft, coated in a nice gel and oh-so-yummy!  Now go on and make something amazing!
