Kaleidoscope Herb Planters

July 18, 2018 by Jess MillionMoments

I have always been a maker at heart, and when the kids came along I reveled in banking all the ideas I could for all the fun years to come. With school out soon, I’ve been stocking up on supplies in hopes that we can avoid the inevitable summer slump, and today I have an adorable tutorial for you! These DIY kaleidoscope planters use a mix of new craft supplies and found items from around the home, and they are perfect for kids, grownups, and everyone in between!

Here is what you need:

  • 2 large cans – washed out
  • 2 small herb plants or seeds if you want to start that way
  • potting soil
  • Mod podge
  • multiple pieces of tissue paper, cut into random shapes
  • sponge brushes
  • popsicle sticks (optional – for smoothing edges instead of using fingers)

Now let’s get back to the craft. Here is what you do:

First, if you haven’t already done so, empty and wash out your cans, then let them dry. After that, gather your supplies and get ready to create! To make these all you have to do is brush a layer of Mod Podge all over the surface of your can, stick on your tissue paper pieces (layering is fine), and then brush on a final layer. Here is a visual to make it a little easier:

Easy peasy, right? Once you have it covered, let it sit for 15 minutes to dry, then go back over with another thin layer of Mod Podge to make sure everything is sealed in place. It will look similar to this:

Let it dry a second time for at least 30 minutes, then move on to your planting. For this, fill your can with potting soil, add in your plant, cover, water, and then you are done!

And that’s it! Aren’t they adorable?!

These are great as a family activity, and my kids love that they have their own plants to take care of now, too! So, what are you waiting for? Get to making!
