If you’re a regular around here, then you know that I have a lot of love for cereal. I love using it in recipes, I love eating it as a snack, and I love that there are so many varieties to choose from! One of my top 5 is Honey Bunches of Oats, so when they asked me to throw a cereal party I jumped at the chance. With today being National Cereal Day (yes, it’s a thing), I thought it would be perfect for a little cereal centered celebration! Read on to check out our morning with Honey Bunches of Oats, plus snag a fab new cereal bar recipe too!
I set everything up in the back yard since it has ben in the 70’s here all week, and with Spring right around the corner we have been spending more and more time outdoors each day. For my spread I included a few boxes of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal along with milk, mini cupcakes covered in Honey Bunches of Oats, and a batch of my fabulous layered white chocolate cereal bars. I’m a firm believer in “simplicity is key”, so I always try to keep my party spreads as easy as possible. This occasion was no exception, and between the cupcakes and the bars I didn’t even break a sweat!
Now, seriously. These bars? Ah-ma-zing. Between the white chocolate, the rich cake mix, and the crispy, nutty hint of flavor that the cereal brings to it I was in love! You can find the complete recipe at the bottom of this post, and trust me, you’re going to want to make these babies!
The star of this show was the Honey Bunches of Oats cereal, and I loved working it into each dish on my table, but of course the best way to eat it is in a bowl with milk!
I didn’t want the food to have all the fun, so I also set up a “paint your own cereal bowl” activity. It was super simple – just a few plain bowls from the $1 section, some acrylic paint, various paintbrushes, and a layer of dishwasher safe Mod Podge was all I needed! To add a pop of color to my festivities, I whipped up this adorable sign in Photoshop, and you can print it out for yourself by clicking 1, 2, and 3. Cute, right?
Overall, this was a really fun morning, and a great way to kick off the upcoming outdoor season. Cleanup was a breeze, and we had a great time bonding as a family while snacking and soaking up the sun!
And now, here’s my ridiculously good Layered Cereal Bar recipe!
- 1 cup crushed Honey Bunches of Oats cereal
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 1 egg
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1 bag white chocolate chips
- nonstick pan
1.) First combine your cake mix, butter and egg in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly and then add in your cereal. Stir until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
2.) Divide your dough mixture in half. Put one half of it in your pan and firmly smush it down. Next, sprinkle a layer of white chocolate chips evenly over your dough.
3.) Lastly, spread the other half of your dough evenly on top and pop it in the oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until you have a nice golden brown color. Let them cool for a few minutes, slice into squares and serve!
