We are in full on Halloween mode at my house. It has always been my favorite holiday, but having a toddler makes it so much more exciting because I get to see him experience the festivities and magic of it all! One of my favorite parts of Halloween has always been pumpkin carving but it has come a LONG way since my childhood. Before the days of fancy carving kits and Pinterest the norm was to saw out a set of triangle eyes and a lopsided smile with a kitchen knife hoping you didn’t cut off a finger! Luckily today it is easy to carve up an intricate design and wow the neighborhood, but you need the right tools.
Kitchen knives are too dangerous, especially around the kids but Pumpkin Masters has a great collection of safe carving kits to suit your creative vision. Besides special tools, each kit comes with pre-made templates to make designing your pumpkin easy. Awesome, right?!
We decided to put them to the test and set up a carving station on a picnic table in our back yard. We let Judah pick out the patterns, then prepared our pumpkins and got started!
He was creeped out when we scraped out their innards, but Kaia dove right in. She even tried to eat the pumpkin tops!
Judah settled on a cute monkey mummy pattern from the Surface Carving Kit and my husband got to work. First he taped it to his pumpkin, then followed the lines using the included pounce wheel to mark out the pattern.
Next he removed the paper, touched up any holes he might have missed and used the razor-type carving tip to “shave” the pattern into the pumpkin. He let Judah help him out too!
I carved one of my own using the original carving kit and it turned out fantastic! Check out the finished products, aren’t they cool?
They are even cooler at night thanks to kid safe and flame free pumpkin lights.
I let Judah pop a few of them into our pumpkin and he had a blast watching the colors change! I’d say our pumpkin adventure was a hit!
