I have a confession to make. For the first six months of Little J’s life I used disposables. At first I didn’t even know about cloth diapers, then after a few months of having TONS of trash I started looking into a better option. I found some cute cloth diapers online (without doing any research) that turned out to be a disaster! After that I was a bit intimidated but I still felt we needed to eliminate the extra waste, so I started really researching. I couldn’t believe the options! There truly is a diaper for every person and every situation.
Eventually I felt confident enough to make the switch and decided on a diaper trial from Jillians Drawers so I could find out first hand which diapers worked for us. (Diaper trials are where you pay a small deposit to “test drive” a variety for a certain amount of time. You then return the ones you didn’t like and pay for the ones you keep. This is a fantastic option if you are new to cloth!!!) Some worked and some didn’t, but now I knew what I was looking for! Now Little J has been a cloth baby for six months and I love it! I don’t have a large stash by any means – i have 13 pockets, 3 prefolds, and 2 covers and I wash my whole stash almost every day- but at least we are going in the right direction!
I was also amazed at how much money we saved. Before the cloth we kept track of diaper purchased, and in six months spent a whopping $700! OUCH!!! Our total cloth purchases have been around $300 and I plan on spending about $100 more to build up my stash, but we will never have to buy diapers again. Plus, we have been able to put the money we’ve saved toward a 3 day beach vacation for our anniversary in a few weeks!
There are so many pros to cloth diapering, and (for me) no cons. I know some people can’t deal with the “eww” factor, but it’s the same with disposables really, because you still have to deal with the poo! Overall, this was the best decision possible for my family. And besides, would you rather have:
